Rude Librarian in SSH Library

I have been a UQ student since 2008 till present, and have always chosen SSH library as the ideal location for self-studying and preparing assignments. All these years, I have NEVER EVER encounter such a rude and impatient librarian when ushering students out of the library near closing time as I did today.

I am very well aware that the library closes at 8pm and that students are expected to leave the library at 7.55pm. As I was preparing myself to leave the library today at 7.50pm, I was reminded by a very polite librarian that the library is closing. Then, came another librarian who started to raise her voice impatiently at individual students near the stairs area in Level 2 that we have to leave NOW, as she indicated "we" (which I suppose meant the staff of SSH library) are all waiting for us to leave, where she referred students with a very loud "YOU". I think what was even worst was, she personally blamed individual students for the delay in closing the library, when there was still another 5 minutes before 7.55pm for students to leave the library. If she would have rephrased her words and probably lowered her tone, and said in the manner as the first librarian did, I would not mind it at all, as we all know everyone wants to be home soon. I left the library at 7.53pm.

I am just very disappointed by how students who are the MAIN users of the library are treated in such a rude manner. I believe students deserve the respect as much as the Librarians. I have always think highly of the facilities and services in SSH Library, as well as the helpful, polite and kind assistance of the SSH librarians, and have recommended it to many students. I don't even mind the library being closed on most of the public holidays, though it would be ideal if it was open for students to make full use of their time for academic purposes. However, after being treated in such a rude and disrespectful manner tonight, I left with quite a negative impression of the library now. I hope this particular librarian would not continue to treat students with such disrespectful and rude manner, as I know all the librarians in the SSH Library have been nothing but kind and helpful in all the years I have studied here. Nonetheless, it will be a shame, if the behavior of this one librarian may ruin the image of the staff in SSH Library and the impression of the services that it provides for new students as well as regular students.

Thank you for bringing this matter to the Library's attention. I'm sorry that your experience, and that of other students, on Friday night was not as pleasant as it should have been. The matter will be investigated and staff will be reminded of the appropriate behaviour to use when speaking with library users. It would seem that this event has not been your usual library experience and I thank you for the very positive comments you make about the Library and its staff and the service you have received over the years you have been a student here at UQ.
