length of time from book ordering to loan availability

Dear library

I was wondering what the process is for books that are ordered to actually end up on the shelf. From the time that the library database indicates that a book has been ordered - a book that is available from Amazon within 5 days (or within two weeks if it was requested via inter library loan), it seems to take a number of months before it is available? Even when the database indicates that the ordered book has been recieved but is in process, it takes more than three weeks to process the book before it can be loaned. Is there any way that the process can be sped up?

Cheers
Cameron

Dear Cameron,
The Library has agreements with various vendors to provide material at discounted rates. As the Library is spending University money, we are under an obligation to spend that money as economically as possible. As an organisation, we cannot deal with Amazon. The time an item takes to arrive depends on many factors, but generally most items arrive in the library within three to four weeks. Once they have arrived, they must take their place in line with all the other items the Library orders, for processing. This year so far we have ordered over 30,000 physical items and over 100,000 e-items. Once an item arrives in the Library, you can ask for it to be found and made available for loan.
