I would like to suggest the following books for the UQ Library:

More Precisely: The Math You Need to Know to do Philosophy by Eric Steinhart. Broadview Press, ISBN 9781551119090 / 1551119099

Logic for Philosophy by Theodore Sider. Oxford University Press, ISBN 0199575584/978-0199575589

Depth: An Account of Scientific Explanation By Michael Strevens. Harvard University Press, ISBN 9780674031838

The first two books are advanced undergraduate/postgraduate student level textbooks, useful for MA, MPhil and PhD students who need to fill some knowledge gaps at the start of their research candidature. The last is a book that is very popular with philosophers of science right now. There is a reading group with this book as the focus, but there are no copies in the library.

Skritter is a useful tool for people to develop their skills in Chinese and Japanese. In particular to develop writing skills.

A fuller description of the product is on the following web page:

Just wondering if the DHPSE library may be able to introduce computers into private study rooms. It would be beneficial when practising for presentations.

Hi,
I've had really bad experiences while studying at BSL.
The rooms are hardly ever available for group studying/discussions as a single person books an entire room to him/herself.
The groups in the rooms are really noisy and continue to make a ruckus even after asking them to keep it low and reporting to the security. I had a group of students playing cards and having a feast in the BSL room 3 level 3 right now. They have been at it for 4 hours now!

I hope the libraries find some way of ensuring that these spaces are not misused.

Regards,
Rahul.

The LGBT Casebook. Edited by Petros Levounis, M.D., M.A., Jack Drescher, M.D., and Mary Barber, M.D. 2012. ISBN 978-1-58562-421-8

It has just been published by the American Psychiatric Association and is one of the first comprehensive textbooks written on managing mental health in LGBT people that is aimed specifically at medical students and junior doctors. As a medical student with an interest in the health of marginalised populations I would find it to be a most useful resource and so would many of my colleagues I am sure. It can be found here:

Hi
I was using a computer in the Link the other day (the floor that runs between Duhig and SS&H libraries) and the desks on which the computers sit were absolutely filthy. There were ants crawling on some of the desks and there were crumbs and sticky grease and coffee marks everywhere.

It was extremely off putting. The black surface of these tables shows up marks easily - it looks like they have never been cleaned or wiped.

Not a good impression!

And the keyboards could do with a clean too. Many are filthy.

Cheers
Belinda
