Could the library once again please do something about addressing patron's in regards to 'computer etiquette'? I remember last year there used to be a sign around BSL which stated something along the lines "If a computer is unattended for 15 minutes then you forfeit it".

Today, I was sitting on level three in between two computers which had been left idle for at least an hour. The persons both put post it's on the monitor saying "Computer in Use". After waiting for a reasonable amount of time, I moved the other persons belongings aside and went on to use one because I needed to type something up. The original user came back 30 minutes later and asked if I could 'temporarily' use the computer because she was here first, by then I said that it wasn't fair for other users who needed a PC and that the computer already had logged itself off. Afterwards she and her friend moved to the other computer next to it and started talking really loudly and saying "Gosh, I really hate library nerds", "They're such bullies" etc etc... which was incredibly childish.

All this would have never happened if more notice was brought to attention about proper sharing of computers in the library. Can the library at least look at replacing the outdated (2009?) message on the logon screen with something more relevant like the 15 minute rule? Or is such a rule something the library no longer has?

I have a suggestion for helping people to return books in time. Recently, I accidentally returned some books quite late. It was my fault, but I didn't intentionally return them late and I know that if I'd received more notifications that they were overdue I would have realised they were overdue and brought them back much earlier.

I had received a notification from the library a few days before it was due, but I was on holidays at the time and it got lost in the constant stream of emails. Then, as far as I know, I didn't receive any more emails about the book being overdue. The only reason I realised it was overdue was that I checked the mail one day, which hadn't been done for about a week (our fault), and found a letter saying that if the books weren't returned by a certain date I'd have to pay for them. After which I immediately returned the book. (I think part of the reason I'd forgotten about the books is that the loan periods these days are quite long -- or at least as a postgrad student -- so the due date can slip out of your mind. I know it's still ultimately your responsibility to get them back on time, but I'm just suggesting something to make it a bit easier to remember).

I think it'd be helpful, and most people would appreciate it, if they received emails about about overdue books on the due date, and once every few days after that point. That make it much harder to accidentally overlook due books and would help get books returned more promptly.

Regards,
James.

Taken from Ask A Librarian:

a suggestion, can we get hot water facilities in BSL? Even if its just a kettle. It would be so useful and used by many during the late study nights to make tea and coffee! (of course people would bring their own tea and coffee)

So I've been working on something solidly for two hours and then I'm writing in my books for a while/addressing textbooks. Log out occurs. And I lose everything.

Why? (No recent document retrieval either).

Hello,

There has recently been a new edition of "Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple" (Gladwin) published. This is quite a popular book with medical students, so it would be great to see the new edition on shelves!
