If Word 2007 has crashed while using EndNote, it will disable the EndNote Add-in and the EndNote tools will no longer be visible on the ribbon.

Alternatively, Word 2007 may have detected an error in the add-in. If this has occurred, users will typically be presented with the following error message: "Word experienced a serious problem with the 'cite while you write' add-in. If you have seen this message multiple times, you should disable this add-in and check to see if an update is available. Do you wish to disable this add-in?" [YES/NO]

If a user selects Yes then Word 2007 will disable the EndNote add-in and the EndNote tools will no longer be visible on the ribbon.

In either case, you can restore the the EndNote tab to the ribbon using the following procedure:

    • Open Word 2007.
    • Click on the Office button in the top left-hand corner.
    • Click Word Options at the bottom of the dialogue box.
    • When the Word Options window opens, click on Add-Ins in the left-hand column.
    • In the Manage drop-down menu, select Disabled Items and click on the Go button.
    • The EndNote add-in will show up as Add-in: cite while you write (endnote cwyw.dll)
    • Highlight the EndNote add-in and select Enable
    • Close the Disabled Items window
    • At the bottom of the Word Options window, click OK.
    • Close and re-open Word 2007.
    • Check that the EndNote tab is visible on the ribbon.
