    General Features of the Style

    Anonymous Works

    Click on Anonymous Works in the left-hand frame to display the available options.

    The Instructions to Authors and the sample reference give us no guidance on how to treat anonymous works. With an author/date style, it is usually desirable to have some substitute for the author's name, so check the option Insert Text and leave the default text Anonymous, which will appear in place of the author's name.

    When entering references in your EndNote library, you should always leave the Author field blank if the work is anonymous. As you have now seen, the output style can supply text such as Anonymous or Anon.

    If you were creating a numbered style, you would probably select the option Leave Author Blank.

    Page Numbers

    Click on Page Numbers in the left-hand frame to display the available options.

    EndNote can take the data from the Pages field in the references in your library, and format it in various ways. The Instructions for Authors make it clear that our journal is using full page numbers, so check the option Show range of pages.

    The other options are fairly self-explanatory. Don't change page numbers means that EndNote will use the data exactly as it appears in the Pages field in the references in the library.

    Journal Names

    Click on Journal Names in the left-hand frame to display the available options.

    Some editors specify that names of journals should be abbreviated in references. There are various systems of abbreviations in use: BIOSIS, Index Medicus, Chemical Abstracts, etc. You can store up to three systems of journal abbreviations in a Journals Term List which is linked to your EndNote library.

    As you can see from the Instructions for Authors and the sample paper, our journal is using abbreviations of journal titles. These are probably BIOSIS abbreviations. In the sample library which we will be using for testing, BIOSIS abbreviations have been stored in the Journals Term List as Abbreviation 1.

    Check the option Abbreviation 1.

    If you never use abbreviations of journal titles, you would select the Don't Replace option. With this option, the output style will use the journal titles exactly as they have been entered in your library.
