      EndNote Styles

    What is a Style?

Output styles are files that are used to control the appearance of references in a bibliography.

The name of the style refers to the journal or publisher that has defined the bibliographic format.

Styles can be modified and new styles can be created using EndNote's style editor.

    Finding the Correct Style

    1. Try the Library's EndNote styles. These have been written by Library staff. Please contact if you have any difficulties.
    2. See the complete list of styles available on the EndNote website.
    3. See our list of tutorials and guides which include self-teaching tutorials on writing EndNote output styles.

    Information for Macintosh users

If you are using OSX, you should find that the files available for download from this page will be recognised as EndNote styles in your Macintosh version of EndNote.

If not, or if you are using earlier versions of the Macintosh OS, you can convert the files to Macintosh format. To do this:

    1. Go to the Mac EndNote page at the University of Maastricht. The information there is relevant to all versions of EndNote.
    2. Download the file called this archive and decode it with Stuffit Expander or similar software. The file may decode automatically.
    3. Double click on the "Endnotes.sit" icon to create an "Endnotes folder" with the 3 applications create_endnote_filter and create_endnote_style and create_endnote_connection
    4. Download the required output style (see below) and drop it onto the create_endnote_style application in the "Endnotes folder".
    5. Move the new output style to the Styles folder of your EndNote software.

    Special Notes

You must insert the styles in the correct folder where your copy of EndNote has been installed. Typically this will be C:\Program Files\EndNote...\Styles. If you do not insert the Styles file correctly you will not be able to access it from the Style Output Manager when using EndNote. However if your operating system is Microsoft Vista, you must follow a different procedure for saving the files.

If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser, just click on the file name in the list below and Save the file.

If you are using Firefox as your browser, clicking on the file name in the list below will open a new window containing meaningless text. Instead, do a right click on the file name and select Save Link As.

If you are using Netscape as your browser, you will have to hold down the Shift key while clicking on the file name in the list below.
