Go to UQ EndNote home page

What do you do if you want to submit a paper to a journal, but there is no output style for that journal supplied with the EndNote software?

    Style Manager in EndNote

Go to the Style Manager in EndNote. To do this, click on Edit>Output Styles>Open Style Manager.

Bear in mind that, from EndNote X3 onwards, only a small number of major styles are installed with the software. These are the styles that you will see in the Style Manager. In earlier versions of EndNote a much wider range of styles was installed with the software.

When the list of EndNote Styles opens, click on the Find by button. Then select your subject area, and you will see a list of EndNote output styles in that area.

Click on the journal names, one by one. You should be able to see a preview of how that style formats references, by clicking on the Style Info/Preview button. (To see this button, you may need to click on the More Info arrow in the Styles Manager window.)

You may be able to find a style which is identical, or at least very similar, to the style of the journal to which you are submitting your paper.

Style Finder on the EndNote Website

Go to the styles page on the official EndNote website. From here you can access the latest versions of the thousands of styles created for EndNote.

At the top of the list of journals, you will see the Style Finder.

Use the section of the Style Finder which allows you to input data describing the citation style (e.g. Author-Year) and the first three fields of a journal reference and the Bibliography Sort Order for the bibliographic style that you require.

When you have entered this data, the screen might look something like this:

Then click on the Find Styles button, and the server will retrieve a list of EndNote styles which match those criteria.

Create Your Own EndNote Output Style

The EndNote software allows you to create your own output styles.

For more information on how to do this, consult the Help function in EndNote.
