This document aims to provide a fairly complete list of new or changed features in version X1 of EndNote. A video demonstration of the new features in EndNote X1 can be viewed on the EndNote website. A patch for the Windows version was released in October 2007. The patch is designated EndNote X1.0.1. CONTENTS
Windows EndNote X1 will run on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Vista. For word processing, it is compatible with Word 2000, XP (2002), 2003 and 2007. Macintosh EndNote X1 will run on OS X (10.3.9 - 10.4.x). For word processing, it is compatible with Word X and Word 2004. COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER SOFTWARE We are told that the Cite While You Write Add-in for Word will not create conflicts with other add-ins such as Snagit and FlashPaper. This had been an issue in earlier versions of EndNote. A common installation problem in EndNote is the non-appearance of the EndNote tools in Word. EndNote X1 has a new Configure EndNote Utility which should make this easier to fix. Access this utility from the Windows Start button, by proceeding to the Programs menu and selecting EndNote. Alternatively use the file Configure Endnote.exe in the folder C:\Program Files\EndNote X1\. The Word Cite While You Write add-in files are now stored in a common folder at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Thomson ResearchSoft\Cwyw\. We are told that this will reduce problems for users who share a computer. A common problem that occurs in upgrading is that the Folder Locations in your EndNote preferences are carried over from the previous version. This means that you will still be accessing Filters, Styles and Connection Files supplied with the previous version. To correct this, click on Edit>Preferences and select Folder Locations. Check that the Style, Filter and Connection folder begin with the path: C:\Program Files\EndNote X1\ … If not, click on the Select Folder button to select the EndNote X1 folders. GROUPING REFERENCES IN A LIBRARY Users have often asked for a feature that allows them to mark references when searching or browsing their library. The new Groups feature should satisfy that demand. To set up a new group, make sure that the Groups pane is showing at the left of the library window. If not, use the Show/Hide Groups icon on the Main toolbar to display the Groups pane. Click on References on the menu bar, then select Groups>Create New Group. A box with New Group will appear in the Groups pane at the left of the library window. Delete the text New Group and type a name for the group. Click on All References at the top of the Groups pane to display all references in the main pane. When searching or browsing the library, you can transfer references to a group by drag-and-drop, or by selecting the references and using a right click to select Add references to … You can set up as many as 50 groups (increased to 500 in the X1.0.1 patch) in your library. A group is just a subset of the references in the library. A particular reference may be assigned to more than one group. Groups can be renamed and deleted. References can be deleted from a group, but they will remain in the library until deleted from the library in the normal manner. The names of all the groups are listed in the Groups pane at the left of the library window. They can be opened from this pane. The Show/Hide Groups icon on the Main toolbar allows you to display or hide the Groups pane. The Electronic Resource Number field, which was always intended for recording the digital object identifier (DOI) has now been renamed DOI. The Link to PDF field has been renamed File Attachments. As before, it can be used for linking to a PDF, Word document, spreadsheet, etc. The corresponding icon on the Main Toolbar (a paperclip) has been renamed from Open PDF to Open File. Up to 45 files can be attached to a single reference. The Image field has been renamed Figure, perhaps to make it clearer that it can be used to store figures which can then be inserted into Word documents. Many of the reference types have new fields. In some cases, the custom fields have been used to create these new fields. For example: The output styles have not been updated to format these new fields. In addition to the full Search function, there is now a Quick Search box on the Main Toolbar. It performs a string-search of all references in the library. When using the full Search dialog box, the drop-down menu of fields now has the eleven most commonly searched fields grouped at the beginning of the menu. After performing a search, the Search dialog box remains on top as the front window. You have to close it or drag it out of the way to see the search results. This change was apparently made in response to requests from users, although some users are likely to find it irritating. The same behaviour will be noticed with the Search dialog box when using connection files. There is a new option in the Display Fields section of the Preferences which allows you to Display all authors in the Author field. This will allow you to see all authors of a reference in the Library window, without opening the reference or using the preview pane. The Display Fonts section of the Preferences provides a wider range of options. You can now set up separate fonts for text in Library windows, text entry, field labels and search text. In the X1.0.1 patch, the ability to display active (clickable) URLs in the Preview Pane of the Library window was reinstated. This feature had not been working since the introduction of EndNote 8. If you have set up modified reference types, and wish to transfer them to another machine, or to share them with other EndNote users, there is now a simple function for doing this. Click on Edit>Preferences>Reference Types. Under Reference Type Table, you will see Export and Import buttons. Use these to export your modified reference types as an .xml file, or to import such a file. When manually editing reference types, there is a bug which prevents you from editing text in the top cell (the reference type name). The workaround is to go to the cell below and arrow up to the top cell. Now you will be able to edit the text in the top cell. When accessing connection files from the Tools menu in EndNote, the command Connect has been renamed Online Search. Additional journal term list files have been added to EndNote in recent versions, and a total of 12 journal term list files are now supplied in the C:\Program Files\EndNote X1\Terms Lists folder. In EndNote X1 there is a new list entitled Zoological Records, which is apparently based on the Zoological Record database. It contains almost 12,000 journal titles in the fields of biology and animal sciences, with BIOSIS abbreviations. When using the OpenURL Link command to link to full text of articles via an institutional link resolver, it is no longer necessary to open the reference first. The Transfer References command on the Tools menu has been renamed EndNote Web to clarify its function. The Examples folder contains the Paleo library and other files used in training. When installing the software, the default option is now to install this folder in a common user area (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents\EndNote). This may be helpful for those teaching EndNote in multi-user environments. When EndNote X1 is installed on a PC which is running Word 2007, two things happen: The commands on the EndNote tab look like this:
Note that the EndNote commands have been organised into three groups: Citations, Bibliography and Tools. Some of the commands, such as Insert Citation and Convert Citations and Bibliography, have drop-down menus containing further commands. The Find Figure command is now one of the options under Insert Citation. The Styles Manager box appears at the top of the Bibliography group. Changing the style here will automatically reformat the document in the new style. The basic Format Bibliography command has become Update Citations and Bibliography, but the functions for amending the formatting and layout of the bibliography, which previously formed part of that command, are now accessed by clicking on small arrow in bottom right-hand corner of the Bibliography group. The Remove Field Codes command has become Convert to Plain Text (which seems misleading) and is one of the options under Convert Citations and Bibliography. The Generate Figure List command has disappeared. The Update Citations and Bibliography command now performs this function. The keyboard shortcuts are still available for the Cite While You Write commands. Those who do not use keyboard shortcuts will probably find it convenient to copy the commands which they use frequently onto the Quick Access Toolbar at the top of the Word 2007 screen. To do this, right click on the EndNote tab and select Customize Quick Access Toolbar. There are other commands that you might wish to add to the Quick Access Toolbar, such as the Insert Footnote command from the References tab. Word 2007 Bibliography Function There is a new citations/bibliography function in Word 2007. This feature is similar to a basic version of EndNote, and allows the user to store references (sources) on their computer and add citations to a Word document. A bibliography can be generated in one of ten styles (APA, Chicago, MLA, Turabian and others). When EndNote X1 is installed, the commands relating to the Word 2007 Bibliography function disappear from the References tab of the ribbon. The expectation is that someone using EndNote will not be using the Word Bibliography function. If you open a document which contains Word 2007 citations, they can be converted into EndNote CWYW citations by using the Convert Citations and Bibliography command, and selecting the Convert Word 2007 Citations to EndNote option. (There may be a bug in this feature: it seems to convert the bibliography but not the in-text citations.) If you want to export the references contained in the Word 2007 citations to your EndNote library, select the Export to EndNote command. Under this command there is an option, Export Word 2007 Citations, which will export the Word citations in the current document to your EndNote library. There is another option, Export Word 2007 Master List, which will export all the Word 2007 Bibliography sources stored on your computer to your EndNote library. This feature was introduced in the X1.0.1 patch. The Format Paper function, which has long been available for formatting RTF documents, can now be used to format references in ODT documents. ODT is the standard word processing (text) format used by the OpenOffice software suite. WINDOWS MOBILE DEVICES (POCKET PC) This feature was introduced in the X1.0.1 patch. After installing the EndNote for Windows Mobile software on your Pocket PC, you must designate a library on your desktop which will be synchronised with your handheld device. You can enter EndNote references into your desktop EndNote library and/or into your handheld library. You can then synchronise files between your desktop EndNote library and your handheld EndNote library. The reference size limit on the handheld device is 64K. References can be created, edited and deleted on the handheld device and then synchronised with the desktop library. References on the handheld device can be searched and simple sorting is possible. |
