Importing records from the International Medieval Bibliography to EndNote is a rather complex procedure. You will need to use the Microsoft Excel software, but you do not have to be familiar with Excel. Just follow the instructions given below.

After you have performed your search of the database, check the records which you wish to download to EndNote. There may be several screens of records. Note: If your search has retrieved too many references, you will not see the check boxes beside each reference.

When you reach the bottom of the final screen of records, click on Keep selection to save the checked records from all screens.

Click on export in the left-hand frame. Select the export format CSV. Select the method of export download to local computer.

Click on the Start export button. When prompted, save the records to your computer. They will be saved as a comma-delimited file (*.csv)

Open Microsoft Excel. Open the file of references. (Note: at Files of type, you will have to select All Files to see the file that you saved.)

When the spreadsheet opens, use the Save As function to save it as a Text (Tab delimited) (*.txt) file. Close Microsoft Excel.

Open Microsoft Word and then open the tab delimited file that you saved in Excel. The beginning of the file will look something like this:

tab delimited export from International Medieval Bibliography

You must edit this file before it can be imported into EndNote. It would be wise to make a copy of this file, and edit the copy. If you make any mistakes, you can always return to your original file and make a new copy.

At the beginning of the file, insert a new line, and type
    *Journal Article
Note the asterisk. Press the Enter key at the end of this line.

On the next line, you must type a series of EndNote field names. Between each field name, you must press the Tab key. Type them as shown below. Note that TAB means "press the Tab key".

    TABVolumeTABPagesTABPagesTABNotesTABNotesTABYearTABKeywordsTABKeywordsTABKeywords
    TABKeywordsTABKeywordsTABUnusedTABKeywordsTABKeywordsTABUnusedTABNotes

Immediately below this are several lines which give the field names from the International Medieval Bibliography. These begin with Reference and end with Review(s). Delete these lines.

The beginning of your file should now look something like this:

tab delimited export from International Medieval Bibliography, edited and ready for import to EndNote

Save these changes and close Microsoft Word.

Open EndNote and open the library into which you wish to import the records. Click on File|Import to open the Import dialogue box.

At Import Data File choose the amended file. At Import Option use the drop-down menu to select Tab Delimited. Click on the Import button.

The records should all import with the Journal Article reference type. In some cases you will need to change the reference type. The references will also need some further editing. Use the Edit|Change Text command to remove the quotation marks.
