What are the EndNote Folder Locations?

The EndNote Folder Locations specify where the Filters, Styles and Connection Files that you use are located on your computer.

In recent versions of EndNote (from version X2 onwards), there are actually two locations for the Filters, Styles and Connections folders:

EndNote Program Files. This is where EndNote places the Filters, Styles and Connections when the software is installed. You should not need to add to, delete or edit files in these folders.

Personal Folders. These are located in your Documents (or My Documents) area. This is where you add any new Filters, Styles or Connections that you have downloaded, and this is where you save any changes to the Filters, Styles and Connections supplied with the software.

If you download a new version of a style, filter or connection file, or if you edit one of the files supplied with the software, you may find that you have two files with the same name: one in the Program Files and one in your Personal Folders. In this case, EndNote ignores the file in the Program Files and uses the file in your Personal Folders.

Where are my Personal Folders for Filters, Styles and Connection Files?

In EndNote, click on Edit on the top menu bar. From the dropdown menu select Preferences.

When the EndNote Preferences window opens, click on Folder Locations on the left-hand side.

This will show you the current settings for your personal folders. If you have installed EndNote on your computer for the first time, it will probably look something like this:

folder location preferences in EndNote X3

You can see the locations of the folders. They should be in the Documents (or My Documents) area on your hard drive. If you are working on a network, the locations are likely to be in an area of the network where you normally save your documents.

If you have updated from an earlier version of EndNote (especially a version before X2), the folder locations may be pointing to the Program Files, because there was no need to use personal folders in earlier versions. If you are using EndNote X2 or later, you must set up the personal folders in your Documents area. To do this, click on the EndNote Defaults button (see the screenshot above). This will show you where those personal folders should be located.

    Setting up the Personal Folders

Once you have checked the EndNote Preferences to see where the personal folders should be located, you should now create those folders. Be sure that the names and locations of the folders match those given in the EndNote Preferences.

You are now ready to download or edit Filters, Styles and connections.

Instructions for those using versions up to EndNote X1 with Windows Vista

Vista will not allow the user to save files to the Program Files area. This is the area where the EndNote Filters, Styles and Connections folders are installed.

If you wish to download additional filters, styles or connection files, or if you wish to edit any such files, you will have to change the location of your Filters, Styles and Connection folders to the Documents area of the hard drive. You then have to amend the preferences in EndNote to reflect this.

For example, if you want to download some additional filters, you must find the EndNote Filters folder in the Program Files, copy that folder, and paste it into the Documents area. Then you can download the additional filters and save them in the new folder.

Then go to EndNote and click on Edit on the menu bar. From the drop-down menu select Preferences. When the Preferences window opens, look for the section named Folder Locations.

The default Folder Location for your Filters folder is in the Program Files area. You must browse to locate the new folder in the Documents area, and select the new folder.

The same procedure applies if you want to download extra styles or connection files, or if you want to edit such files.

Instructions for those using versions up to EndNote X1 with Windows XP

You can use the default folder locations. You do not have to amend the EndNote Preferences.

Save your new or edited files in the following folders:

      • C:\Program Files\EndNote...\Filters
      • C:\Program Files\EndNote...\Styles
      • C:\Program Files\EndNote...\Connections
