    What is a Connection File?

    The Online Search (Connect) command in EndNote lets you connect directly to online bibliographic databases, search for the references that you need, and retrieve those references without ever leaving EndNote.

    The online search function uses the Z39.50 internet protocol. Not all databases support the Z39.50 protocol.

    In addition to the UQ Library's Connection Files (below), there are many connection files for library catalogues supplied with the EndNote software.

     

    Where can I use Connection Files?

    Because connection files use a special internet protocol (Z39.50), there are security restrictions on their use.

    1. On public computers in the library

    You can only use the connection files which have asteriks (**) in the Library Computers column.

    2. On a home computer, using a commercial Internet Service Provider

    You should be able to use all connection files, except those which are marked "Can only be used from computers on a UQ campus" in the Other Information column.

    3. On staff computers in departments and schools on a UQ campus

    This depends on the security restrictions of the departmental network. You may be able to use all connection files.

     

    Information for Macintosh users

    If you are using OSX, you should find that the files available for download from this page will be recognised as EndNote connection files in your Macintosh version of EndNote.

    If not, or if you are using earlier versions of the Macintosh OS, you can convert the files to Macintosh format. To do this:

    1. Go to the Mac EndNote page at the University of Maastricht. The information there is relevant to all versions of EndNote.
    2. Download the file called this archive and decode it with Stuffit Expander or similar software. The file may decode automatically.
    3. Double click on the "Endnotes.sit" icon to create an "Endnotes folder" with the 3 applications create_endnote_filter and create_endnote_style and create_endnote_connection
    4. Download the required connection file (see below) and drop it onto the create_endnote_connection application in the "Endnotes folder".
    5. Move the new connection file to the Connections folder of your EndNote software.

    Special Notes

    You must insert the connection files in the correct folder. See our FAQ on folder locations.

    If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser, just click on the file name in the list below and Save the file.

    If you are using Firefox as your browser, clicking on the file name in the list below will open a new window containing meaningless text. Instead, do a right click on the file name and select Save Link As.

    If you are using Netscape as your browser, you will have to hold down the Shift key while clicking on the file name in the list below.

    Windows users can download all of these filters as a single zipped archive

    When you open the Connection Manager in EndNote and highlight the required connection file, click on the arrows beside More Info (or Show Info in earlier versions) and a text box will open, which allows you to scroll through the information about the connection file.
