      EndNote and Web of Knowledge

There are several ways in which you can use EndNote with the Web of Knowledge databases:

See also our information on configuring the Go to ISI links for linking back to the records on Web of Knowledge.

Export references from Web of Knowledge databases directly to your EndNote library

There are two different ways of exporting directly:

    1. One page at a time (useful if you only want to export a few references)
    2. Marked list (for selecting and exporting large numbers of references)

    1. One Page at a Time

Check the boxes to mark the records which you wish to download.

At the bottom of the screen, under Output Records, at Step 1 use the default setting Selected records on page.

At Step 2, use the default setting with plus Abstract checked.

At Step 3, click on the Save to EndNote, RefMan, ProCite button.

If prompted, choose the EndNote library where you wish to save the references.

    2. Marked List

When you are searching, check the boxes to mark the records in which you are interested. Click on the Add to Marked List button to add the marked records to the Marked List.

You will now see a Marked List tab at the top of the screen. When you have finished searching, click on this tab and you will see a list of all the marked articles.

At the top of the Marked Records screen there is a box where you specify the Output Options.

Under Step 1, you must select the fields to include in the output. The options will vary, depending on the databases which you have been searching. Be sure to check Author(s), Title, Source. You may be able select additional information for export, and we suggest that you check at least the keywords and abstract fields.

Now go to Step 2. If you are working on the computer on which your EndNote software and library are loaded, just click on the Save to EndNote, RefMan, ProCite button.

You may be prompted to select an EndNote library. The references will be imported automatically into your library.

Download references to disk and import into your EndNote library with a filter

If you are not working on the computer on which your EndNote software and library are loaded, you can save the marked records to disk.

Mark the records and display the Marked List, as explained above.

Select the fields to be exported, then go to the Save to File button. Use the dropdown menu to select Plain Text and then click on the Save to File button. Save the file and you can later import the file of saved records into EndNote using the import filter ISI-CE which is one of the standard filters supplied with the software.

With some of the Web of Knowledge databases, the records will import more accurately if you download a specific filter for the database from our EndNote Filters page. Check that page to see if we have a filter for the Web of Knowledge database which you are using, and read the instructions explaining how to download the references.

Search the Web of Science database from within EndNote using a connection file (Online Search)

Web of Science is the only one of the Web of Knowledge databases which can be searched from within EndNote by using a connection file. There are four Web of Science connection files supplied with the EndNote software:

    • Web of Science (ISI): This will search all files of the database.
    • Web of Science AHCI (ISI): This will search only the arts and humanities file.
    • Web of Science SCI (ISI): This will search only the science, medicine and technology file.
    • Web of Science SSCI (ISI): This will search only the social sciences file.

We suggest that you select the file which is most appropriate to your subject area. Searching a smaller file will probably produce better results.

To use one of these connection files, your computer must have a University of Queensland IP address, so you must be using a computer on a UQ campus. On public computers in the UQ Library, you must first use your web browser to connect to any website external to UQ. This is to establish download quota authentication.

Searching Web of Science with a connection file is in some respects different from searching Web of Science via the web. Note the following points:

      Cited Reference Searches

      • With the EndNote connection file, you can only perform general searches, i.e. you can search the source journals by author, title, subject. You cannot perform cited reference searches.

      Author Searches

      • Enter the author's name in the following form: hoffmann, e [note the comma after the family name]
      • Multiple initials must be separated by a space, e.g. hoffmann, e r
      • It is not possible to truncate searches for author names

      Title/Keywords/Abstract Searches

      • If you enter two words, the database will find references which contain those word anywhere in the record. To search for a phrase, enter the phrase in inverted commas, e.g. "global warming".
      • Use the asterisk to truncate search terms, e.g. fung* [to search for fungal, fungi, fungus]

      Journal Searches

      • This search option allows you to limit your search to articles published in a specific journal. The journal must be one of the Web of Science source journals. Enter the journal title in full

Set up an email alert to receive weekly updates

    • This function is available with Web of Science. It is not available with all Web of Knowledge databases.
    • After you have performed one or more searches, click on the Search History tab.
    • When the search history is displayed, delete all searches, except the one which you wish to save. Click on the Save History/Create Alert button.
    • Save your search on the Server. You must register to do this.
    • Check the box beside Send Me E-mail Alerts. This will run your search against the database on a regular basis and email the results to you.
    • In the Alert type box select Full Record. For the E-mail format select ISI ResearchSoft.
    • Click on the Save button.
    • When you receive your weekly email alert, save the whole message as a Text File (*.txt). Beware: some email programs may remove line breaks from the references, which will cause problems when importing them into EndNote.
    • Import this file into your EndNote library, using the normal EndNote import procedure. For the Import Option, use the filter called ISI-CE.

Set up an email alert to receive tables of contents of each new issue of selected journals

Configuring the Go to ISI links

When you import records from Web of Knowledge to EndNote, you should find that the URL field for each record has a hyperlink that will connect you back to the full record on Web of Knowledge. It will look something like <Go to ISI>://000249015500019

These links are useful if you want to go back to a record on Web of Science and see if it has been cited again since you last checked it.

If you are working on a computer on a UQ campus, you should find that these Go to ISI links work without any problem. If they do not, click on Edit in the menu bar in EndNote, and select Preferences. In the left-hand frame, click on Online. Now on the right-hand side, check the contents of the ISI Base URL box. It should read http://gateway.isiknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi

If you are working on a home computer, you will find that these Go to ISI links do not work. To get them to work, you must edit your EndNote Preferences. To do this, click on Edit in the menu bar in EndNote, and select Preferences. In the left-hand frame, click on Online. Now on the right-hand side, delete the contents of the ISI Base URL box, and replace it with the following text http://ezproxy.library.uq.edu.au/login?url=http://gateway.isiknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi
