    In-text Citations: Sort Order

The last section under the Citations heading in the style edit window is labelled Sort Order. It specifies how EndNote should arrange citations when multiple works are being cited simultaneously. There is no guidance on this point in the Instructions for Authors of our journal, but if you look through the citations in the sample paper, you will notice that wherever multiple citations occur, they are always arranged alphabetically by author. And where there are multiple citations by the same author, they are arranged by year.

Check the option Author + Year + Title, which seems to be the most appropriate for our style.

The option Don't Sort means that citations are formatted in the order in which they have been inserted in the document. If you need to specify a more complex sorting order, check the option Other and a dialogue box will appear which allows you to do this.

For footnote styles, this section of the output style specifies how citations are sorted when more than one reference has been inserted at the same point in a footnote. It does not apply to multiple citations within a footnote when there is other text separating the citations.

We have now finished specifying how our in-text citations should appear. Remember to save your work by holding down the Ctrl key and pressing S.
