In-text Citations: Author Lists and Author NameAuthor Lists In the Templates subsection, we specified that the Author field from the references in our library should appear in the in-text citation, but we have not yet specified what to do if there is more than one author. In the Instructions for Authors it says: "For three or more authors use the first author followed by "et al." in the text", and if you look at page 2 of the sample paper, you will find references like: (Towers and Champagne, 1988; Wat et al., 1980). Click on Author Lists under the Citations heading in the left-hand frame to see the available options. The first section deals with Separators. Our journal only uses separators between author names when there are two authors. So in the first row, insert 2 in the second box. The third box (between Authors) can be ignored in this case, as it will be overridden by the information in the final box (before last Author). And the information in the final box matches the style we are using, so no change is required. The second row of the Separators section can be ignored. It is not required for most styles. The second section deals with Abbreviations. Note that there are separate options for First Appearance of the citation and for subsequent appearances of the citation (Thereafter). Our style makes no distinction between first and subsequent appearances, so we shall configure these two sections in the same way. Under First Appearance and under Thereafter, check the second option, and accept the default values, to show that if there are three or more authors, only one name is to be listed, followed by "et al." Note however that you must delete the comma and leave the space before "et al." Our journal does not use a comma here. When you are finished, the screen should look like this:
Author Name We have specified how many authors should be listed, but we still have not specified exactly how the author's name should appear. Click on Author Name under the Citations heading in the left-hand frame to see the available options. In the section labelled Name Format, the first two boxes (First Author and Other Authors) specify how the authors' first names and last names should appear. These options are not applicable to our style, as it uses only the authors' last names for the in-text citation. In the box labelled Capitalization, use the drop-down menu to select As Is, which means that the names are capitalised in the same way as they appear in the references in your library. In the box labelled Initials, leave the default setting of Last Only, which means that only the last name is used, without initials. The second section, labelled Consecutive Citations by the Same Author, is a little more difficult. Look at page 3 of the sample paper, and at the end of the first paragraph, note the citation: (Horn and Lamberton, 1963; Uhlenbroek and Bijloo, 1958, 1959). From this citation we can see that when there are two consecutive citations to the same author, the author name is not repeated, and the years are separated by a comma and a space. So check the box labelled Show author name only once. Also check the box labelled Separate these citations with. The default text in the following box is a comma followed by a space, which is correct for our style and does not need to be amended. When you are finished, the screen should look like this:
