    Figures and Tables

This section of the tutorial is applicable to EndNote 7 only.

You are not obliged to use EndNote to manage your figures and tables. If you prefer to store your figures and tables elsewhere, and then insert them into your document yourself, you can ignore this section of the output style.

In EndNote 6, figures were always placed at the end of the document. With EndNote 7, the placement of figures and tables is determined by the output style. All output styles written in EndNote 7 contain a section which specifies if the figures and tables are to be placed in the text or at the end. If they are placed at the end, the tables appear first (with the heading, List of Tables) followed by the figures (with the heading, List of Figures).

In the left-hand frame of the style edit window, there are three sub-sections under the heading Figures & Tables. Click on Figures.

Under Placement, select a button to place the images either within the text of the document, near the reference to the figure, or at the end of the document.

(Note: If the output style is configured to place figures and tables in the text, it will place them after the paragraph in which they were cited. You can cut and paste a figure or table to move it to another location, but when you select the Generate Figure List command again, EndNote will move them back to their original position. To keep the figures or tables where you have placed them, select the Cite While You Write Preferences command in Word and click on the Figures and Tables tab. Check the option "For custom placement, keep figures and tables in their current position when re-generating the figure list.")

Under Captions, select a button to place the label and caption either above or below the image. You can check the option "Place label and caption on separate lines" if required. Note that the label is the numbered designation (e.g. "Figure 2") which is assigned by EndNote. The caption is the text which you have stored in the Caption field in the reference for the image in your EndNote library.

The screen might now look something like this:

Figures options for a style in EndNote 7

In the left-hand frame of the style edit window, click on the Tables section under Figures & Tables.

The options are the same as for Figures. Check the appropriate buttons.

In the left-hand frame of the style edit window, click on the Separation & Punctuation section under Figures & Tables.

The options here apply to both Figures and Tables. The first section, dealing with separation, is self-explanatory.

The next section deals with punctuation. Note that you can opt to have a period after the label (e.g. "Figure 2. Bird Evolution") or a period after the caption (e.g. "Figure 2 Bird Evolution.") or both (e.g. "Figure 2. Bird Evolution.") Check the appropriate boxes.
