The Bibliography: Author Lists

In the Templates subsection, we specified that the Author or Editor field from the references in our library should appear in the formatted reference, but we have not yet specified what to do if there is more than one author. Have a look at the references at the end of the sample paper, especially the reference by Arroo and others. It is clear that the style requires all authors to be listed, with a comma and a space between each name.

Click on Author Lists under the Bibliography heading in the left-hand frame to see the available options.

The first section deals with Separators. Our journal uses a comma and a space between all author names, and also before the last author name. So in the first row, the default data in the Separator between Authors box is correct. However the data in the Separator before last Author box is not correct. Delete the data in this box, and replace it with a comma followed by a space.

The second row of the Separators section can be ignored. It is not required for most styles.

The second section deals with Abbreviations. Our journal is listing all author names in the list of references, so the default setting (List all author names) is correct.

When you have finished, the screen should look like this:

The Bibliography: Author Name

We have specified how many authors should be listed in the reference and how their names should be separated, but we still have not specified exactly how the author's name should appear. Click on Author Name under the Bibliography heading in the left-hand frame to see the available options.

In the section labelled Name Format, go to the box labelled First Author and click on the arrow to view the options. Now look at the bibliography from the sample paper, and you will see that authors are being listed with last name first, followed by a comma. Select the option Smith, Jane.

As you can see from the bibliography of the sample paper, the second and subsequent authors are listed like the first author. So in the box labelled Other Authors, select the option Doe, John.

In the Capitalization box, select the option As Is.

Look at the sample paper to see how the authors' first names are listed. You will note that only the initials are given, and that multiple initials are separated by a full stop without spaces. So in the Initials box, select the option A.B. making sure to choose the option without spaces between the initials.

The second section of the Author Name panel deals with Subsequent Work(s) by the Same Author(s). Look at the sample paper, and specifically at the references by Harborne. It is clear that when more than one work by the same author is cited, there is no unusual treatment of the author's name. So the default option List Author Names as Usual is appropriate for our style. (This is also the option normally used for numbered styles.)
