      Journal Title Abbreviations & EndNote
 
 

 

    In some disciplines, researchers have to use abbreviations of journal titles in their publications. EndNote handles this problem by using term lists in which the user can store both the full titles of journals and the corresponding abbreviations.

    We have produced several journal term lists for EndNote users. These lists are in plain text, and can be imported into an EndNote library on a Windows or a Macintosh computer.

    We recommend that you delete all terms in your existing journals term list and import the new list. Alternatively, you can import the new list into your existing journals term list and EndNote will filter out any duplicate entries. EndNote will only consider entries to be duplicates if the data in all columns is identical.

    Note for Macintosh users of EndNote 9: There is a bug with EndNote 9 for the Macintosh which affects the importing of term lists. Although the lists import correctly, EndNote ignores the data. To resolve this issue, you need to open the library using EndNote 9.0.1 for Windows. Then export the Journals term list and save it as a text file. Empty the Journals term list, and reimport the saved term list. Then when the library is opened on a Macintosh, the term list will work. This bug does not affect terms which you insert yourself: it only affects imported term lists.

    Medicine

    This is a list of over 9,900 journals, with Index Medicus/PubMed/Medline abbreviations. It is based on the Medical term list supplied with the EndNote software, enhanced with additional journals which began publication between 1996 and 2007.

    Biosciences

    This is a list of about 6,100 biological journals, with BIOSIS abbreviations.

      NOTE: EndNote X1 includes a term list named Zoological Records, which contains almost 12,000 journal titles with BIOSIS abbreviations. We recommend that researchers in zoology and related disciplines use that list.


       

    Chemistry

    This is a list of about 2,400 chemical journals, with Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI) abbreviations. It is based on the Chemical term list supplied with the EndNote software, enhanced with additional titles.
