Download Records from Informit to EndNote

There are three ways of downloading references from Informit databases:

  1. Direct Export
  2. Using a Filter
  3. Using a Connection File

1. Direct Export of References to EndNote

Direct export is the easiest way of getting references into your EndNote library. It works well with some Informit databases, but in some cases the results are poor and need a lot of editing after import.

On our EndNote Filters page we list the major Informit databases. In some cases, we recommend that you use direct export, but in other cases we recommend that you use a filter, because the filter will give better results.

The direct export procedure is very simple. When searching the database, check the boxes beside the records which you wish to download to EndNote.

Click on Save at the top of the list of results.

This will display the Save Records screen. Note that you can download a maximum of 200 records at a time.

Under Output Format, use the drop-down menu to select EndNote Direct. The screen should now look something like this:

Direct export settings for Informit databases

Now click on the Save Records button. You will be prompted to select an EndNote library. Choose the library, and the references will be imported.

Remember to check the references after import. In some cases you will have to go back to the database to get further details and amend the references in your EndNote library.

2. Downloading References and Importing with a Filter

In some cases, you will get better results if you first download the references from Informit, and then import them into EndNote with a filter which is specific to the database you were searching.

Check our EndNote Filters page. If we have a filter for the specific Informit database which you are searching, download that filter and use the following procedure to import references from that database. (See the notes on the Filters page about where to save the filter.)

Each Informit database has a different record structure. To import references with a filter, you must search one database at a time.

Check the records which you wish to download. Note that a maximum of 200 records can be downloaded at one time.

Click on Save and a new screen will be displayed.

Under Records to Save, the option Marked Records should be checked.

Under Fields to Save, select Complete Record.

Under Label Format, the option Short Field Labels should be selected.

Under Output Format, select Plain Text. Do not select the EndNote option if you are using one of the filters from our filters page.

Under Search History, you can uncheck the option Include search history in output.

The screen should now look something like this:

Now click on the Save Records button.

Save the file as a Text Document (*.txt).

Open EndNote and import the file of saved records using the filter which you downloaded.

3. Using a Connection File

On our EndNote connection files page, we have connection files for some of the major Informit databases.

Unfortunately you cannot use connection files on public computers in the Library.
