    SETTING UP YOUR ACCOUNT

    RENEWING YOUR ACCOUNT

Once you have set up your account, you can access EndNote Web at http://www.myendnoteweb.com from any computer with an Internet connection for a period of twelve months. Login using your email address and the password which you chose when you registered.

If at any time you access EndNote Web from a computer with a UQ Internet address, your account is automatically extended for a further twelve months.

    USING ENDNOTEWEB WITH MICROSOFT WORD

To use EndNote Web to format Microsoft Word documents, you must download a plugin and install it on your computer. See the help screen dealing with EndNote Web Plug-ins, and follow the instructions there.

If you have the full desktop version of EndNote X.0.2 (or a later version) on your computer, you will already have the necessary plugin for EndNote Web.

Once you have installed the plugin, you will be able to display the EndNote Web Toolbar in Microsoft Word. This enables you to use the Cite While You Write function in EndNote Web. For more information on Cite While You Write, see the help screens in EndNote Web.

USING ENDNOTEWEB ON COMPUTERS IN THE LIBRARY

The Word plug in is available on most computers in the UQ Library.

When you open Microsoft Word on a Library computer, find the EndNote tab on the ribbon at the top of the screen. Click on the EndNote tab to display the tools for the desktop version of EndNote.

To access EndNote Web, click on the Preferences command on the EndNote tab. This will open a dialogue box.

In the dialogue box, click on the Application tab. Now check the EndNote Web option. Enter the email address and password that you chose when you set up your EndNote Web account.

A connection is now being established between Word and EndNote Web, so you will be asked to supply your normal UQ username and password. Finally you will again be asked to enter your EndNote Web account details.

When authentication is complete you will see the EndNote Web commands at the top of the screen in Microsoft Word.

    GETTING HELP

Before using EndNote Web, you should view the tutorials on the EndNote Web website.

In EndNote Web click on Help to access the help screens.

The UQ Library does not provide any training courses on EndNote Web, but basic assistance is available from our AskIT service or from our Ask a Librarian service or from the Information Desk in your branch library.

You can also contact the technical support staff at EndNote Web.

    DOWNLOADING REFERENCES FROM DATABASES

USING OUTPUT STYLES TO FORMAT BIBLIOGRAPHIES

Hundreds of output styles are supplied with EndNote Web. These will format bibliographies in many different styles.

UQ Favourite styles appear at the top of the list. The names of these styles all begin with the numeral "1".

See the information above on using EndNote Web with Microsoft Word.

    SOME OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

EndNote Web is a new product, and still under development. You can check the comparison between EndNote Web and the complete desktop version of EndNote, to decide which product is likely to be suitable for your needs.

You cannot edit filters, output styles or connection files.

You cannot set up you own reference types.

You cannot use journal term lists to convert abbreviated journal titles into full titles (and vice versa).

If you are also using the full desktop version of EndNote, you can transfer references from the desktop to the web (and vice versa), but these will be separate databases of references. There is no automatic synchronisation between the desktop and the web. If you add or edit a reference in one database, you have to transfer the new or edited reference to the other database. The EndNote manual advises:

"You should plan to edit references in only one place — either the Web library or the desktop library. Duplicate references, found in both the EndNote web library and the desktop library, cannot be synchronized. When you copy references from one library to another, the reference in the target library is overwritten."

If you have been inserting references into a document using EndNote Web, and you decide that you would like to upgrade to the full desktop version of EndNote, see our guide on upgrading from EndNote Web to EndNote.

Your references will be stored on a server in the United States. United States government agencies are able to access your data at any time, without notice. You should consider the privacy implications of this.
