What is a Connection File?

The Connect command in EndNote lets you connect directly to online bibliographic databases, search for the references that you need, and retrieve those references without ever leaving EndNote.

What this means to you as a user of EndNote is that just about any bibliographic database that supports the Z39.50 standard can be searched using the EndNote search interface, and the results can be retrieved directly into EndNote without having to go through the intermediate steps of downloading the data to a text file and importing that file.

Try the Library's Connection Files. Please contact if you have any difficulties. There are many connection files for library catalogues supplied with the EndNote software: you can use those connection files in addition to the ones available below.

Where can I use Connection Files?

Because connection files use a special internet protocol called Z39.50, there are security restrictions on their use.

You can use only the connection files which have asterisks (**) in the Dial-Up column.

You should be able to use all connection files, except those which are marked "Can only be used from computers on a UQ campus" in the Other Information column.

This depends on the security restrictions of the departmental network. You may be able to use all connection files.

Information for Macintosh users

If you are using OSX, you should find that the files available for download from this page will be recognised as EndNote connection files in your Macintosh version of EndNote.

If not, or if you are using earlier versions of the Macintosh OS, you can convert the files to Macintosh format. To do this:

1. Go to the Mac EndNote page at the University of Maastricht. The information there is relevant to all versions of EndNote.
2. Download the file called this archive and decode it with Stuffit Expander or similar software. The file may decode automatically.
3. Double click on the "Endnotes.sit" icon to create an "Endnotes folder" with the 3 applications create_endnote_filter and create_endnote_style and create_endnote_connection
4. Download the required connection file (see below) and drop it onto the create_endnote_connection application in the "Endnotes folder".
5. Move the new connection file to the Connections folder of your EndNote software.
