What is linking to fulltext and why would I use it?

Linking to full text is about embedding links in your web pages or *Blackboard* courses that, rather than going to the home page of site,
go directly to individual journal articles, saving time for your students.

However, there are two main reasons why you cannot simply copy and paste a link to an online journal or to a specific journal article:

• Session IDs. With some resources, the link includes a dynamically generated ID which changes each time you logon.
  You cannot link directly to these resources.
 
• Off-campus access. If you or your students are using an ISP other than UQ, your computer's IP address will not be
  recognised as belonging to UQ. Where you see the ezproxy label in the procedures below,
  the url http://ezproxy.library.uq.edu.au/login?url= must be added to the beginning of the link to the resource.
  Please check the individual instructions below.

Using the Links Created by the Library

(a) Journal Articles or Book Chapters

• Open another browser window
• From the Catalogue, search for the article title or the book title
• If a record is found, check for a link to the online article or book chapter
• Right click on the link
• Select Copy Shortcut or Copy Link location [message will vary according to the Browser you use]
• Paste into Blackboard or web page

(b) Journals

• Open another browser window
• From the Catalogue, search for the journal title
• If a record is found, check for a link to the online version
• Right click on the link
• Select Copy Shortcut or Copy Link location [message will vary according to the browser you use]
• Paste into Blackboard or web page

Creating your own links to journal articles

Step 1: Find the journal in the catalogue

• Open another browser window
• From the Catalogue, search for the journal title
• If a record is found, check for a link to the online version
• Also check the online holdings include the relevant issue
• Note the title of the link (i.e. the database that includes the journal
• Click on the link
• Return to the page you are currently viewing
• Go to the procedures for linking to the specific resource (see below)

Before making your web page or reading lists live, test the urls you have created the next day.
You may find that you have incorrectly made them, and the link will fail either through session or authentication errors.
