UQ Library extends borrowing privileges to staff and students visiting from other universities. For Australian universities, it is subject to University Library Australia:
a National Borrowing Scheme for Students and Staff. Similar arrangements also apply to visiting students and staff from overseas universities. Note:
- Borrowing is in-person only
- Borrowing from another institution's library is a privilege. By requesting to use this service, you are indicating your willingness to abide by the rules and borrowing conditions of UQ Library.
Australian universities:
- an academic or researcher
- a higher degree student (Masters or PhD)
- an externally enrolled coursework student from an institution located outside the Brisbane metropolitan area
- an internal undergraduate from an interstate campus
- a general staff member employed on an ongoing basis
Overseas universities: You will need a letter from your home library indemnifying UQ Library for any losses or damages to UQ Library property.
To apply:
- Complete the application form.
- Print this off, sign the declaration and hand it in at the Loan Enquiries Desk, Social Sciences and Humanities Library. You may also apply via the Gatton and Ipswich Libraries
- To finalise your registration you will need to provide photo ID and proof of eligibility, for example confirmation of enrolment or current pay slip
- If you are a student, there is a $50 (GST inclusive) registration charge. Eligible students from Griffith University or the Queensland University of Technology whose fee is subsidised may present a letter from their home institution that will exempt them from the $50 payment.
Whenever possible, we will attach a UQ Library barcode to your home institution ID card. Otherwise you will receive a Library card.

In general, material not on the shelves is already on loan. If the catalogue indicates that the item is
'available' and you are unable to find it on the shelves, check that you have written down the location and call number correctly.
Then check the sorting shelves.
If you are still unable to find the item, ask Library staff for help.
Whenever possible please return material to the branch library from which it was borrowed. If this is not possible, material may be returned to any branch library or via Australia Post. For branch address details go to Locations
Standard loans are subject to recall if required by another client. An email will be sent to you requesting that the material be returned.
You are guaranteed a loan of at least 7 days, but you must return the item by the new due date to avoid incurring a penalty of $1.40 per day.
