Eat less red meat, eat more fibre, skip processed meats - it's really that simple if you want to lower your risk of bowel cancer. That's the message from the Continuous Update Project in their latest (2011) report entitled Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective. The Continuous Update Project (CUP) is an ongoing review of nutrition and cancer research that provides the most up-to-date evidence available on how people can reduce their cancer risk through diet and physical activity. CUP is supported by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research. Other recommendations from the report include:

  • Be as lean as possible within the normal range of body weight
  • Be physically active
  • Limit consumption of energy-dense foods, alcohol and salt
  • Avoid sugary drinks
  • Eat mostly foods of plant origin
