State of the media
The Pew Research Center has just released its annual The State of the News Media report. The 2011 report shows that while American media revenue improved in 2010, and newsroom cutbacks eased, newspapers were still badly hit, with further job losses threatened.
Some experiments with new revenue models began to blossom. However, the report asks the question of whether, in the digital realm, the news industry is actually in control of its future.
Aggregators (such as Google) and social networks (such as Facebook) supply news organisations with a large part of their audience. As news consumption becomes more mobile, news companies must follow the dictates of device makers (such as Apple) and software developers (Google again) to deliver their content.
