The real vs the hype
How do you separate the facts about scientific areas of concern from the disinformation in media scare campaigns or peddled by vested interests and lobby groups? One way is to use Sense About Science. This group, an independent charitable trust based in Britain, tries to set right the misrepresentations of science and scientific evidence on issues that matter to society, from scares about plastic bottles, fluoride, food additives and MRI scans to controversies about genetic modification, stem cell research and radiation. The group encompasses around 2000 scientists, from Nobel Laureates to postdoctoral fellows.
