New Web Crazes...#2 - Second Life

Blogs > Social Sciences and Humanities Library Blog

Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents." Residents number almost five and half million and to be one you register, create your avatar and off you go exploring, having fun, meeting other members, buying and selling land and products (there is thriving real economy on Second Life); you can also study (eg. a Harvard law course) and visit libraries.

Libraries are located on Info Island , Cybrary City (perhaps UQ Library was ahead of its time) and other locations.

Several real libraries have a presence in Second Life (SL) and use them as a way of building community by holding events, both professional and social, and conducting meetings and training. The Australian Libraries Group has its own building in Cybrary City and is keen for librarians to get involved; perhaps you'd like to do a desk shift. SL is still in its early days and how it develops and is used is up to its members.

As Jennifer I too leave it to you to have a look and see what you think. If anyone is a member of SL and has visited its libraries please post and let us know about your experience.

There are various blogs that you can read and learn more about what goes on at these libraries and for a first hand look at life on SL I recommend the ABC Four Corners program, You only live twice.

I downloaded Second Life at home and found I stopped using it because there was NOTHING to do! And NOBODY to talk to! I guess maybe we are at a disadvantage in Aus because of the time difference - maybe most Second Lifers are American and all in bed when we get there...
