Repository of the Week: BCO-DMO
BCO-DMO - the Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office - manages and serves oceanographic data and related documentation, and provides researchers and others with the tools and systems necessary to work with marine ecosystem data.
BCO-DMO (or Beeko Deemo) is publicly available, with more than 5600 datasets, and over 170 projects to share with its users. The system accommodates many different types of data, including biological, chemical, and physical measurements and modelling results. It provides access to information and data in the BCO-DMO repositories via simple text-based and map-based user interfaces.
BCO-DMO supports reuse of the data for new research endeavours, and also makes 'real data' available for use in teaching contexts, from primary school to university level. This video helpfully explains the site further.
BCO-DMO stands out as repository of the week, because uniquely, it provides advice on creating and using data management plans, as well as a publicly available Data Management Best Practice Guide. BCO-DMO is located at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), an organisation that is very supportive of open data and research. It also has a webpage dedicated to additional oceanographic data repositories. Happy exploration!
