Web metrics - what are they, and what do they mean?
The UK-based Developing
Research Excellence and Methods (DREaM) group aims to develop a network of
library and information science researchers by bringing them together at five
events over the 18-month duration of the project.
DREaM event 3 was called Building the skills to build the evidence
base and included an
introduction to webometrics by Professor Mike Thelwall of Wolverhampton
University.
He discusses projects undertaken such as identifying those countries in Europe that attract international interest and recognition for their life sciences research (Germany yes, Hungary no.) Another project measured European Union university research collaboration by analysing university web sites and the links between them.
Software to analyse web metrics is discussed, as are 'alt-metrics' - measures of impact beyond traditional citation counts.
The DREaM online community has links to previous events on its website and also to the other talks at DREaM event 3 which was held at the British Library in London in January, 2012.
