How it should be done
The National Science
Board has recently issued a report, Digital Research Data
Sharing and Management, from their Task Force on Data Policies. The Board
is calling for comments.
News about the report is here.
The Board have identified ten key challenges organised under six areas:
- commitment to sharing
- reproducibility
- education, training, and workforce development
- cyberinfrastructure
- longevity and sustainability
- ethical and legal implications.
The Board see their role as a leadership one. As the Report says:
"New approaches to data sharing and analysis are transforming the conduct of research in fields that are proactive in engaging with large-scale datasets. Other research communities are just beginning to grapple with the implications of proliferating data. Regardless of their experience, research communities will benefit greatly from the leadership, guidance, and coordination of national and international funding agencies."
The Board comes up with a set of recommendations to help drive the kinds of changes that will guarantee greater openness and better management of data.
The National Science Board is the governing body of the US National Science Foundation, and policy advisors to the President and Congress.
