Tall tales?
Ten Tales of Drivers & Barriers in Data Sharing is a collection of
success stories and lessons learned about data sharing, re-use and data
preservation.
The ten case studies outline the potential for innovation, as well as the barriers to success. They are based on personal interviews with leaders in scientific communities, research infrastructure, management and policy initiatives.
Interviewees look at data sharing from different angles, and provide first-hand accounts of the challenges they have overcome.
All see their work as vitally important, because "It is easy to take for granted that data in the public domain will be protected and remain both available and accessible. Researchers, publishers, policymakers and funders - among many others - have started to appreciate that a robust, sustainably funded infrastructure is absolutely necessary to protect the hard-earned fruits of publicly funded research."
Neelie Kroes, Vice-President, European Commissioner responsible for the Digital Agenda, is quoted in the report:
"We cannot afford for access to scientific knowledge to become a luxury, and the results of publicly funded research in particular should be spread as widely as possible."
The report was undertaken by Opportunities for Data Exchange (ODE).
