Talking Maps was the winner of this year's Libraryhack competition.

Libraryhack is a mashup and apps competition designed to encourage the creative and innovative reuse of library data and digital content. The competition was run by the National, State and Territory libraries of Australia and New Zealand and much of the data was sourced from Data.gov.au.

Talking Maps uses photographs and audio recordings to create stories, which are then superimposed on to maps from the era to which they belong. Stories include:

  • The journey of the H.M.S. Endeavour
  • Sights and sounds of the Brisbane 2011 flood

The Queensland prize was won by Conviz, a web app that allows access to, and visualisation of the British Convict Transportation Registry.

Competitions such as these show the very different uses to which open data can be put.
