Mabo 20th Anniversary

Sunday the 3rd of June marks the 20th Anniversary of the Mabo decision in the High Court. After a decade of litigation, the High Court rejected the concept of terra nullius and recognised the unique rights that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples have to land and water.

Land Bilong Islanders (Blackout, ABC, 1993)

Three Murray Islanders, Koiki "Eddie" Mabo, James Rice, and Father Dave Passi, challenge the Queensland and Australian Governments in a land rights dispute, claiming that islanders, not the state, owns the land. This programme shows something of their struggle, and at the end, the verdict given in the court case.
