Diversity Week Display : 1967 Referendum
The theme of Diversity Week (14th - 18th May 2007) is "We All
Count". A new display in the Law Library was produced with the
assistance of a Diversity Week Grant and focuses on the 1967
Referendum and the subsequent Constitutional changes.
The referendum is frequently but incorrectly believed to have given
Indigenous Australians citizenship rights and the right to
vote.
The referendum did however change the Constitution to enable all
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be counted in the
national census for the first time, and secondly it enabled the
Commonwealth to pass legislation for the benefit of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples (resulting in the passage of bills
related to matters such as land rights and cultural heritage
preservation).
The display comprises of posters created by Law Library staff and
related material from the Library's collection including
photographs and documents from the Fryer Library. An online version
of the display can be seen here
You may also be interested in an online
exhibition created by the Fryer Library which depicts the
events preceding and following the 1967 Referendum
