2013 Staff/Student Cricket Match

Blogs > Ipswich Library Blog

The distinctive sound of willow striking leather rang out on Friday the 5th of July from the Sir Douglas Tooth Oval on the Ipswich Campus. The occasion was the 2013 Staff/Student cricket match. This year the combatants were a team representing the School of Medicine and a team representing the rest of the campus. The "Rest" were made up of staff from The PVCs Office, P&F, Chaplaincy, The Student Centre, Student Support Services, The Library and a smattering of Health Sciences students.
Under clear skies, School of Medicine captain Brendan Hunter had no hesitation in asking the "Rest" team to bat first on what threatened to be a challenging wicket, which had been very well prepared by curators Ashley and Dave. After the allotted twelve overs the "Rest" had worked their way to a defendable 72 runs. Major contributions were made by Drew Ashton, Haider Shah, Kwan Borden, Alan Rix and Kerry Sbeghen.
The "Rest" score seemed less than defendable after SOM opener Simon Barnett took double figures from the first over but tight bowling and enthusiastic fielding clawed back the ascendancy. Brendan Hunter, Neil Kroeger and Alicia Martin posted good scores and were, at times, dominant but as wickets tumbled the task became more difficult.
In the end the "Rest" were victorious by 4 runs. Many thanks to all who participated or came along to cheer it was great fun and, dare I say, cricket was the winner. An indoor cricket rematch is on the cards.
