Finding Sugarman

Blogs > Ipswich Library Blog

Sixto Rodriguez is playing to sell out crowds in his 70s buoyed primarily by the Academy Award winning documentary "Searching for Sugarman". Many of us in Australia remember an earlier time, when Rodriguez played to sell out crowds. Back in the late 70s, after Rodriguez had given up hope of a musical career in his homeland, his records started selling in Australia. When he toured Australia in 1979 he was playing to crowds that matched established superstar Rod Stewart who was also touring at the time. We are commemorating the renaissance of Rodriguez with a display in the library this week. Included are vinyl records, including a very rare Sussex "Coming from Reality" with a fold out sleeve, newspaper clippings and album charts from the time. It is very difficult to listen to Rodriguez's music and believe that the albums were not successful.
