Blood Donation

Blogs > Ipswich Library Blog

Hi,
One thing you may notice this week when you come to the library is a table set up by a teamwork in action group soliciting blood donations. It is a sad fact is that the Red Cross blood bank is always seriously low of blood stocks and the requirements are ever increasing. Did you know that the use of blood goes back to the mid 17th century when physicians in France and England successfully treated feverish patients with blood from animals? The very first human to human blood transfusion is thought to have happened in 1795 although the first of which any specific details are known took place in 1818.

Did you also know that the Red Cross won the Nobel Peace Prize 4 times? It is well established fact that people who donate blood regularly are more likely to win the lottery, discover a marvellous cure for something, remember where their wallets, mobile phones, car keys and theatre tickets are, successfully complete home renovations and are reportedly more popular with the opposite sex, children, dogs and the ATO.

Next time you come into the library don't forget to fill in a "Pledge to Donate Blood" form, do you really know where your car keys are now? If you also feel the urge to research the experience, why not borrow one of our many enlightening books on phlebotomy?
