Week 7 Semester 2

Blogs > Ipswich Library Blog

Hi All, There is the perception that there is information on everything. No matter where you are if you have access to a computer you can find out anything. Unfortunately this perception is false! I was reading through my junk mail yesterday and found an advertisement for a very smart looking shirt with “jet pockets”. I of course thought “what are these things called “jet pockets” and why don’t I know about them?” I immediately turned to the library home page and did a summon search for “Jet pockets”. There were no hits returned. I turned my attention to Factiva, an unlimited search in Factiva led to twelve hits, all declaring that garments had jet pockets but not telling me what they were. Not even Wikipedia has an entry for “Jet pockets”. I began to get concerned, what if we as parents, were leaving our children open to ridicule for not providing garments with jet pockets? I was lost. Having little expertise in the area I decided to ask Bryony Kennedy, one of our staff with a penchant for sewing. Bry described to me what a jet pocket is and I felt relieved that I wasn’t disadvantaging my children by not providing them. I guess my point is, in the library we spend millions of dollars providing access to the highest quality information available but it would be wrong to overlook the most valuable information resource in the library: the people who work there. I believe some of them may even have jet pockets. To make use of these invaluable resources come to a “Finding information for your assignments” class with Margaret Sloan-McDonald in eZone3 at 10AM on Tuesday or come to an “Understanding Citations” class with yours truly on Thursday at 1PM.
