Week 17 Semester 2

Hi All, Exams are over but we must remain mindful of our postgraduate students who are still working away madly. I was talking to a PHD candidate last week and he was saying he was having trouble studying because he was often left looking after his 5 year old son when he had intended to study. I have a solution for this, but I must give a great deal of the credit to Jo Frost (The Supernanny). Jo introduced me to the idea of the naughty corner, where if a child misbehaves they are sent to the naughty corner to consider their actions for a few moments, usually one minute for each year of their age. Extrapolating from Jo’s idea and having proper respect for balance and equity, shouldn’t there be a good corner, a place where a child can go and bask in the glory of having done something good for a few minutes? How about a mundane corner, where a child can go and reflect upon having done something unremarkable for a few minutes? This would mean that anytime a child does…well anything really, there is a corner for them to go to and you can continue with your study while actively parenting. If you require any more tips on preparing a thesis/report there are well over 300 titles to help you here at UQ, but none that incorporate my corner theory…yet. Marcos
