Week 13 Semester 2

Blogs > Ipswich Library Blog

Hi All, Not only is it the last week of semester but we celebrate the 220th birthday of American poet Sarah Josepha Hale. I'm sure Sarah Hale was just as upset with Paul McCartney in 1972 as Warren Zevon and Ronnie Van Zant are with Kid Rock now.

Mary had a little lamb , Its fleece was white as snow; And everywhere that Mary went, The lamb was sure to go. He followed her to school one day; Which was against the rule; It made the children laugh and play; To see a lamb at school. "Why does the lamb love Mary so?" The eager children cry; "Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know," The teacher did reply. Mary had a little lamb, her love was true and sure, and when she found some mint sauce, She had a little more.

I believe The last stanza was not included in the version published in 1830 but was brought to light by the Australian lamb council only a few years ago. This poem has inspired works by Slade, Smashing Pumpkins, Korn and Buddy Guy to name a few. If you seek similar inspiration here at UQ we hold 2 books authored by Sarah Josepha Hale: Liberia, or, Mr. Peyton's experiments. and The ladies' wreath.

Congratulations to Sam Gannaway who won the inaugural UQI Music trivia contest. Special mention to Alex Jessop who took out the artistic award. Good luck with exams. Marcos
