Week 8 Semester 2

Blogs > Ipswich Library Blog

Hi All, Today is my favourite day of the week, it’s the day my Aldi catalogue arrives. This week on page 3 there is a very interesting item, a Hadron Collider for $129.95. I know there have been huge budget blow outs with the HC in Switzerland but we can learn from many of the mistakes made there. For instance, I believe I read that scientists spent 30 years building the tunnel to house the HC. A huge amount of time and money could have been saved had they used a crew of workmen with excavating equipment and a really big drill rather than a few dozen nuclear physicists, some shovels and a miniskip. Storing the device has also been a problem, after all it is 27 kilometres long. If you happen to go to Aldi you will see that they have solved this problem. Also on sale this week at Aldi is The Tardis and they have packaged the 2 items together with the HC stored inside the Tardis with only 2 metres sticking out, just brilliant. If you are looking for the HC in store, they have it on the shelves next to the microwave ovens, after all the HC is actually very like a microwave oven which runs on geologic time. Hit the button wait 4-5 billion years and you could have a universe just like the one we have now. Great Christmas present! If this discussion has sparked your interest in Hadrons the Physical Sciences and Engineering library has a great number of books on the subject which are ready for you to pick up. If your home library is not on the St Lucia campus you could always have it delivered by simply clicking the request button on the top of the catalogue page. Marcos
