Week 19

Hi All, Have you ever looked at a product and thought “I wish I’d thought of that”? Well, on this day in 1881 a man called Edward Berner was the first to pour chocolate syrup onto ice cream in a bowl, until that time chocolate syrup had only been used for making ice-cream sodas. In 1901 his inventive spirit came to the fore again when he successfully poured strawberry syrup over ice-cream in a bowl. There was no resting on his laurels for Berner, in 1904 he was successful with caramel syrup and in 1906 lime. Unfortunately in 1912 on his 3rd pouring tour of the world Berner attempted to display his versatility by pouring a new product, vegemite, over ice-cream in a bowl, in front of a huge crowd at the Brisbane exhibition. Alas, Berner never toured again and retired a broken man. Berner’s memoirs “pouring out my heart” sold poorly and he faded into anonymity. Let us not forget what a great debt we owe this “ideas” man. Special mention should go to Berner’s son Karl, whose idea it was to eat the ice-cream and chocolate syrup in the bowl. In our library we have 312 items dealing with ideas, wouldn’t it be a good idea to check a couple out? I have an idea that that’s what Edward Berner would do. Marcos
