Week 11

Blogs > Ipswich Library Blog

Hi All, Welcome to week 11! Eleven has always been a much unappreciated number nestled between 10, the basis of our numbering and measurement systems, and 12, the number of months in a year, a dozen. As far as I know, there is no word that means 11 of something, 5 brace plus one just doesn’t cut it. So what makes 11 special? Well, the mathematicians will tell you, it is a “Lucas” number. The rest of us of course have no idea what that means. Eleven appears no less than 30 times in the Bible, in fact there are 11 canticles in the Bible. There are actually 11 commandments in the biblical text. Soccer, Cricket, American Football and Field Hockey all have 11 players participating per team at any one time. Some Physicists believe that there may be 11 dimensions rather than the 4 as most of us believe.

For more information about the number eleven come to the library and check out some of our recent arrivals “The Lord of the Rings and Philosophy”, “Monty Python and Philosophy” or “James Bond and Philosophy”. Eleven: It’s more than you think. Marcos
