2013 Staff/Student Cricket Match

The distinctive sound of willow striking leather rang out on Friday the 5th of July from the Sir Douglas Tooth Oval on the Ipswich Campus. The occasion was the 2013 Staff/Student cricket match. This year the combatants were a team representing the School of Medicine and a team representing the rest of the campus. The "Rest" were made up of staff from The PVCs Office, P&F, Chaplaincy, The Student Centre, Student Support Services, The Library and a smattering of Health Sciences students.
Under clear skies, School of Medicine captain Brendan Hunter had no hesitation in asking the "Rest" team to bat first on what threatened to be a challenging wicket, which had been very well prepared by curators Ashley and Dave. After the allotted twelve overs the "Rest" had worked their way to a defendable 72 runs. Major contributions were made by Drew Ashton, Haider Shah, Kwan Borden, Alan Rix and Kerry Sbeghen.
The "Rest" score seemed less than defendable after SOM opener Simon Barnett took double figures from the first over but tight bowling and enthusiastic fielding clawed back the ascendancy. Brendan Hunter, Neil Kroeger and Alicia Martin posted good scores and were, at times, dominant but as wickets tumbled the task became more difficult.
In the end the "Rest" were victorious by 4 runs. Many thanks to all who participated or came along to cheer it was great fun and, dare I say, cricket was the winner. An indoor cricket rematch is on the cards.

Celebrating the Art of Diversity: Healing

Here at Ipswich we are a predominantly health and Medical sciences campus. As such we teach and learn the seeking out of evidence when it comes to choosing between treatments to decide the most effective. In these days the evidence is organized and accessible, but this has not always been the case. For the ancient Celts the evidence may have been almost entirely contained within the mind of the "Wise Woman" and access to this bounty was cryptic to say the least. A poultice of Hemlock along with some lilting chants to remove a skin cancer, passing beneath the belly of a white horse to cure whooping cough, these and many, many other diverse treatments, hundreds of years in development were the Wise Woman's stock and trade. Each culture had their healers toiling in the fashion of the Wise Woman.

To celebrate Diversity Week and in deference to the "simpler" times, we are asking for your home remedies! Those time honoured procedures that have kept your family hale, hearty and happy for generations. All entries received will go into the draw for a $250 JB HiFi voucher. No empirical data or promises of efficacy are required, only a few notes about what they mean to you or your family, their cultural or generational origins and the scientific basis behind them (if any). Send your entries to ipswich@library.uq.edu.au by Monday May 20th.

The winner will be drawn at the Ipswich Campus Diversity Week celebration in Challinor Court at 12 noon on Tuesday 21st of May. For more information go to http://www.uq.edu.au/events/event_view.php?event_id=9301 or see the posters on display in Buildings 1, 8, 12 and the refectory.

prayers and olive oil

Visiting my grandmother in Italy many years ago I complained of a headache. She warmed some olive oil, dipped her thumb into the oil to trace the sign of the cross on my forehead as she recited prayers. I also remember her pouring some of oil into my ear. I've found this article on the internet which mentions the use of olive oil and prayer in early Christian practices. http://voices.yahoo.com/prayer-olive-oil-6094988.html

Finding Sugarman

Sixto Rodriguez is playing to sell out crowds in his 70s buoyed primarily by the Academy Award winning documentary "Searching for Sugarman". Many of us in Australia remember an earlier time, when Rodriguez played to sell out crowds. Back in the late 70s, after Rodriguez had given up hope of a musical career in his homeland, his records started selling in Australia. When he toured Australia in 1979 he was playing to crowds that matched established superstar Rod Stewart who was also touring at the time. We are commemorating the renaissance of Rodriguez with a display in the library this week. Included are vinyl records, including a very rare Sussex "Coming from Reality" with a fold out sleeve, newspaper clippings and album charts from the time. It is very difficult to listen to Rodriguez's music and believe that the albums were not successful.

Information?

Do you recognize this flower? Most people won't because most people will never have seen it. It is the flower of the Dragonfruit plant. It is incredibly beautiful and delicate and never sees the light of day. It blooms at night and withers before the morning sun can touch it. If you didn't know it was there, you would never know it was there. If only there was a way to find out about such things so that they could enrich you life rather than just pass by. Well maybe there is!! Come along to any of the "Quest" library workshops and we will move you closer to information utopia. Come and find out about finding out.

Music Trivia Winners

After three weeks of intense competition, where contestants were drilled on everything from Bach to Black Sabbath, from Grieg to Grinspoon, Luke and Robin emerged triumphant. Luke holds aloft the Trivia championship and all the adulation it brings. There was fiery competition from David, Brendan, Sam, Justin and Nik who all won CDs which, I'm sure, will inspire them to new heights next time around. Robin was delighted to take home the Carlos Luna Modern Strat and unleash the "Clapton" within.

Thanks to all who participated, it was good fun and let's do it all again next semester!

Hi All,

Isn't it amazing how some things are burned into our psyches and remain, not far from the surface, for a lifetime? One place where perpetual evidence of this is displayed is the Abbey Road crossing webcam. There is seldom a wait of more than two minutes before someone is being snapped emulating the Fab Four striding the famous crossing. The generational variety of participants in this re-enactment is staggering, from people who may have been yelling at their children to turn that damn record down in 1970, to people who may have noticed Golden Slumbers medley.mp3 mixed in with the One Direction stuff on their iPod, they all walk the walk. When the original snap was taken in 1969 the photographer was armed with a ladder and a policeman to stop traffic, generally the modern emulators are armed with neither of these so I would assume their results rarely measure up to the original.

In the spirit of these intrepid crosswalkers, music rivia will be starting next week. Attend one session each week for the next 3 weeks and the Carlos Luna "Modern Strat" in the display cabinet could be yours. All sessions will be held in library eZone1 the times are:

Tuesday 29th 11AM

Wednesday 30th 10AM & 1PM

Thursday 31st 11AM

Friday 1st 10AM & 3PM

For more info. come and see me in the library.

See you there.
