EndNote Web & Privacy Concerns
Canadian universities which use RefWorks have come to an
agreement with that company to set up a server in Canada where
Canadian users can store their databases. This is to prevent the US
government accessing those databases under the draconian provisions
of the Patriot Act.
See the following article from the Toronto "Globe and Mail" of
11 November:
Those of us at universities outside the US who plan to
implement EndNote Web should be thinking about this issue. Perhaps
we will have to ask Thomson to set up separate EndNote Web servers
in the UK, Australia, etc.?
At the very least, we should warn our users about the privacy
issues involved in storing their databases on a server in the US.
Of course, for most of our users, this will not be a concern.
