Online resource for Australian Federal Election Speeches

Blogs > Fryer Library Blog

The Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House has launched an online project on Australian Federal Election Speeches.

The website includes the complete text of campaign speeches from 1901-2010. The speeches are organised chronologically for browsing and are keyword searchable. Context is provided by short biographical pieces and summaries of election results.

The explore the speeches page provides some interesting insights into the speeches using data visualizations. As well as comparing the length or reading ease scores of successful and unsuccessful speeches, users can track the frequency of any key words. Similar to the Google books Ngram viewer, you can track the occurrences of words, such as economy, throughout the speeches.

The resource is freely available at http://electionspeeches.moadoph.gov.au/
