Google search + operator removed

Blogs > Research Support: Engineering and Sciences

google.jpegGoogle has removed the + operator which required a search term to be present in every search result. You can now search a single word exactly as is using quotation marks ("").

Google uses synonyms automatically, so that it finds pages that mention, for example, childcare for the query care (with a space). However, you may not want a synonym. By placing double quotes around a single word, you are telling Google to match that word precisely. Find out more in Google's search help. A Google Support forum also discusses this change.
