Applications that aggregate content from social media networks in

RSS feeds are one of the easiest ways of
keeping-up-to-date with your favourite blogs, databases, news sites, podcasts
and more. RSS feeds won't overload your email inbox and can be easily skimmed

Google Reader (Web-based). Great if you already have a Google
account.
Netvibes creates a dashboard with content that you find useful.
Desktop
SAGE (Firefox add-on) - adds an icon to your Firefox toolbar - check your
alerts within the browser.
