Research Support: Engineering and Sciences
Only two months until the Google Reader shutdown – Your Options
Many people will be aware that Google
intends decommissioning Google
Reader on the 1st July. A lot of you who use RSS for your daily news fix would have
already made the change to an alternative service but for anyone who is yet to
abandon the good ship Google Reader there are numerous options out there.
The guys at Gizmodo listed a number of
excellent
alternatives. If you liked the way Google Reader used to work and aren't
comfortable with big changes, The Old
Reader might be the alternative for you. Many of the alternatives on
offer allow you to automatically import your current Google Reader data after
using Google Takeout. UQ Librarians have
also tried out My Yahoo, Feedly (one of the very popular alternatives),
NewsBlur, NetVibes and are also anticipating the
arrival of a new reader from Digg.
Another option is to use the
RSS Reader built into
MS Outlook. This is a good option if you only follow a handful of feeds.
You can then easily see any updates at the same time as you are checking your
email.
Social Media is another option. There's Twitter and Facebook neither of which require any introduction. A hint if you are going to use Facebook as a Google Reader alternative - try using the Interest Lists feature to keep things organised.
If there are any Star Wars fans out there you might be drawn to StaRSS. This isn't really a proper RSS reader but is does look cool for a short while.
But don't worry, there's still time to explore the many options out there.

BISON (U.S. node Global Biodiversity Information Facility) - species occurrence mapping project with 110+ million species
Subject: USGS launches species occurrence mapping project with 110+M records and growing
This information is available online at: http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=3566&from=rss_home
BISON Project URL: http://bison.usgs.ornl.gov
"Biodiversity Information Serving Our Nation or BISON is the only system of its kind; a unique, web-based Federal resource for finding species in the U. S. and territories. Its size is unprecedented, offering more than 100 million mapped records of nearly every living species nationwide and growing. And the vast majority of the records are specific locations, not just county or state records.
What's more, BISON provides an "Area of Interest" search capability in which
users can query by drawing the exact boundary around their area of interest,
down to and including towns, villages, or even much smaller areas such as
parks. For instance, New York City's Central Park has more than
100,000 "species occurrences" recorded in BISON, with each species noted in
detail. Other BISON search options include querying the species by scientific
or common name, year range, state, county, basis of record, or provider
institution.
As for the results, BISON displays them in both an interactive map and a list format. Users can click on each species occurrence point to retrieve more information, such as the institution providing the data, the collector, the date collected, and whether it was from a collection or an observation. Further, occurrences can be dynamically visualized with more than 50 other layers of environmental information in the system. Extensive web services are also available for direct connections to other systems."

Exploring Trove Images
TroveMosaic is an experimental interface for the Trove picture search. Enter a query, and it will build a mosaic from the top 500 records. Group the results by title, collection or decade for different views, and click an image to see it in its home collection.
This project is the work of Mitchell Whitelaw, part of an ongoing project creating generous interfaces for digital cultural collections. Along with the Manly Images interface, TroveMosaic was funded by the State Library of New South Wales.
TroveMosaic requires a modern, standards-compliant browser like Chrome, Safari or Firefox. It is designed for desktop browsers and probably won't work perfectly on mobile or tablet devices (yet).
Trove picture search contains over 7.3 million images on almost every conceivable subject. Hundreds of organisations contribute material including the University of Queensland Library, Queensland Department of Public Works, Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, Geoscience Australia, Royal Geographical Society of South Australia, Australian Academy of Science, Australian Institute of Marine Science, Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, CSIRO, and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation.
