Knovel - Looking for a specific material or property?

Knovel
Have you tried Knovel's new platform? Knovel is an ebook collection of key engineering reference books providing access to technical information with specialized search tools.

  • With Knovel you can analyze data, interact with live tables, graphs and equations, visualize results, plot points along curves and export images and data into Excel and other engineering applications.
  • Use the new Data Search query builder to search by material or substance name, by property, or using a combination. Drag and drop properties into the query builder and use numeric operators and boolean strings to run a search.

Information : where do engineers go?

Engineers : do take advantage of access provided by UQ Library to the premier information resources for civil engineers. Two of the best are the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) and ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) as demonstrated by their inclusion in the top twenty engineering websites recently listed by Global Site Plans.

The ASCE Library helps to find articles of interest across all disciplines of civil engineering providing full-text papers from published ASCE Journals and Proceedings while the ICE Virtual Library is an online civil engineering resource. It hosts the full archive of the Institution of Civil Engineers back to 1836, including journals and books.

Web of Science and Lemmatization

WoK.JPG

The term lemmatization refers to a search engine algorithm that looks at the keyword entered in a search and breaks it down to its root or 'lemma'. The algorithm then includes variants of the root in the search to expand the retrieval so you find additional items that may be highly relevant. Lemmatization is the default setting when searching Web of Science.

With lemmatization a search on the keyword sing will also return items with the keywords sang, sung, sings, singing - all of which may be relevant to the question that prompted your search.

WoK_sing.JPG

Using a wildcard or truncation can bring back unwanted variants of your keyword while lemmatization is designed to retrieve variants that are specifically related to your keyword. If you were to search sing* to find items with sings and singing, you would not find items that only use the variant sang or sung and you would also find other words such as single, singular, singularity and Singapore.

Lemmatization can be disabled by:

  • using a wildcard with your keyword, in the left-hand position *typic, the right-hand position grass* or internally organi?ation, or;
  • enclosing your keyword in quotation marks or inverted commas.

Web of Science is available via the UQ Library.

Database Discussions

As a result of our recent professional development activity - Cyberschool Update, 2013 - it was suggested that a discussion forum be formed for participants to share information and ask questions with regards to databases and eBooks.

As a discussion starter, what session did you find most informative and why?

Click on this link which takes you to our Professional Development page to see presentations from most speakers.

Please note: non-UQ staff and students are not able to comment at the moment. If you email your comments to cyberschool@library.eq.edu.au, we would be happy to upload them to the Blog for you.

Reaxys content expands - workshop 10 May

Reaxys will present a workshop at UQ Library.

  • Date and time: Friday 10 May 2013, 10-11.30am (1.5 hours)
  • Location: Dorothy Hill Engineering and Sciences Library, Don Carruthers Meeting Room (Level 5, Building 50)
  • Booking is not required. Please email us if you would like further information.

Reaxys has ereaxys.gifxpanded its content to include almost 16,000 journals covering essential chemistry information. A link in the top right-hand corner of the Reaxys screen allows you to switch between the old and new interface. Watch the video to find out what's new in Reaxys.

New database: LexisNexis Practical Guidance

The Library has recently subscribed to LexisNexis Practical Guidance, a research tool that offers modules in a range of practice areas. Use this resource to discover practice-related checklists, legislation, case law and commentary. As the name suggests, this resource also offers practioner guidance throughout.

To explore LexisNexis Practical Guidance, click on the relevant practice area appearing on the top of the screen, and then browse to the relevant topic or use the search bar appearing on the right-hand side of the screen. practical guidance screenshot.jpg

AccessEngineering - trial

UQ Library is trialling AccessEngineering until 5 March 2013. AccessEngineering provides:

Please email your feedback on the trial, thank you.

Discover the Power of Knovel's Interactive Graphs

knovelgraphs.jpgKnovel provides access to essential reference works and databases from leading publishers and professional societies covering the fields of engineering, chemistry and the life sciences. The collection is continually expanding.

Knovel's new interactive graphs allow you to plot curves from an equation, digitize charts, and plot and compare several curves from individual points. All five Knovel Graphs, (1) Equation Plotter, (2) Graph Digitizer, (3) Graph Plotter, (4) Phase Diagram Viewer and (5) Parameterized Graph have been reprogrammed with scalable resolution so the graphs can be resized. There is a quick How-to-Use guide available on the interface.

Online access - Register of Australian Mines

The online version of 'Register of Australian Mining' provides a comprehensive analysis of all mines, projects and prospects in Australia.

Fully indexed, it includes full geology details plus a financial and editorial summary of all Australian Stock Exchange-listed mining companies and more than 300 private mining companies. Authentication is required - signon with your UQ details to access the username and password. Find additional mining information sources in the Mining and Metallurgical Engineering subject guide.

Inspec Database Adds 13 Millionth Record

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has announced that Inspec, its database indexing science and engineering research, has reached 13 million records. Inspec adds approximately 700,000 new records each year, indexing scientific literature in electrical engineering, electronics, physics and information technology from 1896.

Inspec on the Engineering Village platform enables researchers to drill down search results using Inspec controlled terms, Uncontrolled terms and Inspec classification codes. The Inspec Thesaurus identifies controlled vocabulary terms and finds synonyms and related terms.

Looking for property data for chemcial compounds?

Scifinder now includes predicted as well as experimental data, giving you access to a huge range of data and spectra.

To date there are 3.7 billion predicted values (for 56.2 million substances) and 4.5 million experimental values (for 3.0 million substances) in the database.

For spectra there are over 100 million predicted spectra and 1.1 million experimental spectra.
